What Is Balayage?
Balayage comes from the French word which means to ‘sweep’ or ‘paint’. With this popular highlighting technique, we can add and blend colour in vertical sweeps across your hair to create a beautiful graduated effect from root to tip.
There are multiple balayage looks to choose from and many ways in which to describe those looks. You may have heard of ombré, root stretch, foilayage, babylights, reverse balayage, strobing, melting, and smudging - all variations on the balayage theme.
As well as looking sensational, balayage offers a low-maintenance hair colour because you can wait longer between colour appointments than you would with traditional highlights or block colour. However, most balayage clients book in for a glossing treatment in-between colour appointments to keep their colour looking vibrant and shiny.
Lived-in balayage - also referred to as creative balayage, root melting, root stretching & colour melting - gives a seamless blend of colour which is often a little darker at the roots and lighter towards the end.
With this look, your chosen hair shades will be added to the ends and middle sections of the hair, with less product added as we move up the hair shaft towards the roots. The effect is a more natural look with the colour blending into your natural hair colour without an obvious regrowth line.
Ideal for people with darker hair, the lived-in balayage look is fabulous, fashionable and very low maintenance. It also works well on all hair lengths.
We are also seeing an increase in people opting for face-framing hair colour - known as The Money Piece. This gives a nod to the chunky highlights seen in the ’90s with bold face-framing strips of colour being added as a contrasting colour to the rest of the head.
This contrasting two-tone colour effect looks beautiful when teamed with a sun-kissed blonde balayage or a striking red balayage. It is particularly effective if you just want a hint of colour rather than opting for a full head of highlights or a full balayage.
Is Balayage Only For Blondes?
While there's no doubt blonde balayage is a popular choice, we also offer a variety of balayage and ombe colours. So balayage and ombre are most definitely is not just for blondes!
Red ombre, brunette balayage with golden highlights, and fashion colour balayage including pretty pastel colours are all wonderful choices.
Your first step when deciding to go for a hair colour change is to book in for a complimentary consultation at our Sutton Coldfield hair salon so we can chat about the looks you love and come up with a plan that is tailored to you.
